Early Life and High School Career
Kellen Christopher Moore was born on July 5, 1988, in Prosser, Washington. His father, Tom Moore, was the head football coach at Prosser High School for over two decades, winning numerous league titles and state championships. Kellen and his younger brother Kirby, who also played football at Boise State, grew up deeply immersed in the sport, often attending their father’s practices.
From a young age, Kellen showed a remarkable passion for football strategy, consistently carrying a notepad to draw plays. In his final two years of high school, his father even allowed him to call his own plays. Despite his relatively small stature, standing at 5’11” by his sophomore year, Moore excelled in high school football. He set Washington state records for completions and touchdown passes during his high school career.
College Football Journey at Boise State
Moore’s exceptional high school performance led him to Boise State University, where he had an extraordinary college career from 2008 to 2011. As a redshirt freshman in 2008, he led the Broncos to an undefeated regular season and was named WAC Freshman of the Year.
In 2009, Moore truly emerged as a standout quarterback, throwing for a school record 39 touchdowns with only 3 interceptions, leading Boise State to a perfect 14-0 record and a memorable Fiesta Bowl victory over TCU. Detroit Lions
Kellen Moore’s NFL journey began with the Detroit Lions, who signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2012. Despite not being drafted, Moore was highly motivated to prove himself. He spent three seasons with the Lions, primarily as a backup quarterback. In 2015, the Lions signed Moore to a two-year contract, but he was ultimately released during the final cuts of training camp.
Dallas Cowboys
Moore then joined the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad in September 2015, reuniting with his former Lions offensive coordinator, Scott Linehan. His opportunity came when Tony Romo suffered injuries, and Moore was promoted to the active roster. He made his NFL debut on December 19, 2015, against the New York Jets, throwing his first career touchdown pass to Dez Bryant.
