Alex Caruso Bio

Alex Michael Caruso was born on February 28, 1994, in College Station, Texas. He developed his basketball skills early on at A&M Consolidated High School, where he was a standout player, earning multiple honors including district MVP and All-State recognition. His senior year averages of 18 points and nine rebounds helped lead his team to the postseason.

Caruso continued his basketball journey at Texas A&M University, where he played four years for the Aggies. Over 137 games, he averaged 8.0 points, 4.7 assists, and 2.02 steals per game, finishing as the school’s all-time leader in assists and steals. As a senior, he earned second-team All-Southeastern Conference (SEC) honors and was named to the SEC All-Defensive Team. He also led Texas A&M to the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in sports management.

Undrafted in the 2016 NBA Draft, Caruso began his professional career by playing in the NBA Summer League and briefly signing with the Oklahoma City Thunder before being waived. He then joined the Oklahoma City Blue, the Thunder’s G League affiliate. His breakthrough came when he joined the Los Angeles Lakers for the 2017 Summer League and subsequently signed the NBA’s first two-way contract, allowing him to play for both the Lakers and their G League team, the South Bay Lakers.

Caruso made his NBA debut with the Lakers in October 2017 and quickly gained recognition for his defensive prowess, hustle, and versatility. He was a key contributor during the Lakers’ 2020 NBA Championship run, starting in the clinching game of the Finals against the Miami Heat. Caruso’s energy and tenacity earned him a regular roster spot, and he signed a two-year contract extension with the Lakers in 2019.

In August 2021, Caruso signed a four-year, $37 million contract with the Chicago Bulls. Wearing number 6 (as his usual number 4 was retired by the Bulls), he became an integral part of their defense-first identity. Despite suffering a fractured wrist in January 2022 that sidelined him for several weeks, Caruso bounced back strongly. He was named to the NBA All-Defensive First Team in both 2023 and 2024 and won the NBA Hustle Award in the 2023–24 season. Known for his gritty play and clutch performances, Caruso became a fan favorite in Chicago.

In June 2024, Caruso was traded back to the Oklahoma City Thunder in exchange for Josh Giddey, reuniting him with coach Mark Daigneault, who had coached him in the G League. Shortly after, Caruso signed a four-year, $81 million contract extension with the Thunder, solidifying his role as a key player for the franchise.

Throughout his NBA career, Caruso has been valued for his defensive versatility, ability to guard multiple positions, and his steady contributions on offense. He stands 6 feet 5 inches tall, weighs 186 pounds, and primarily plays as a point guard and shooting guard.
