Hansel Enmanuel Biography
Hansel Enmanuel Donato Domínguez was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, to parents Hansel Salvador Donato and Katia “Katy” Domínguez Pérez. He was raised with his four siblings in Los Mina, one of the city’s most impoverished neighborhoods. His father was a successful professional basketball player in the Dominican league. In addityion to his youngest brother Salomon, Hansel has three more siblings Abigail, Kaira, Jhohansel.
At age six, a collapsing cinderblock wall crushed Hansel’s left arm, requiring amputation below the shoulder after he was trapped for two hours. He spent approximately six months in the hospital recovering. Despite the trauma, Hansel viewed the incident as a “blessing”. He shifted his athletic focus from baseball to basketball. Initially, his father opposed this decision due to safety concerns but eventually became one of Hansel’s biggest advocates.
The loss of his arm initially affected Hansel’s balance while running, causing him to fall frequently. By age 11, he had reached a height of 5’9″ (1.75 m), and by age 12, he was 6’0″ (1.83 m). He began attending basketball camps and tournaments in the United States at age 13, where he started to recognize his basketball potential.
He successfully dunked for the first time at age 14. In 2020, Hansel gained attention after posting videos of himself playing streetball in Santo Domingo on social media. In October of that year, he made a national television appearance on El Show del Mediodía (The Noon Show) on Color Visión.
Hansel’s Move to the United States
In January 2021, Hansel relocated to the United States after securing a scholarship to play at Life Christian Academy in Kissimmee, Florida. Moisés Micael, the team’s head coach and a former teammate of Hansel’s father, facilitated the move after seeing Hansel’s online videos.
Rise in the US
Quickly after arriving in the U.S., videos highlighting Hansel’s skills gained traction on social media. His performance at the Orlando Winter Showdown, where he averaged 25 points and 11 rebounds per game, further boosted his profile. He also joined the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) circuit with SOH Elite.
High School Career
During his senior year, Hansel averaged 25.9 points, 11 rebounds, 6.9 assists, and 3.4 blocks per game. His contributions were key to his team’s victory in the Central Florida Christian Academy state title.
College Career
Northwestern State (Freshman, 2022-23)
- Appeared in 20 games, starting the final five.
- Scored his first three-pointer against New Orleans.
- Season-best 25 minutes against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the Southland Conference Tournament Championship.
Austin Peay (Sophomore, 2023-24)
- In May 2023 it was announced Hansel transferred to Austin.
- Played in 30 games, starting in six.
- Led the Governors in field-goal percentage (67.5%).
- Second on the team with 24 blocks and third with 35 offensive rebounds.
- Scored first points as a Governor against George Mason.
- Season-high of 8 points and 10 rebounds against Midway.
- Had 9 rebounds and 3 blocks against Murray State.
