Chad Buchanan Bio

Chad Buchanan began his basketball career in coaching. After graduating from Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, he stayed on as an assistant coach at the school from 1997 to 2002. He then moved on to the Kansas City Knights of the ABA, where he served as an assistant coach and assistant director of player personnel for the 2002–03 season. The following year, in 2003–04, he joined Drake University as an assistant coach.
Buchanan transitioned to the NBA when he joined the Portland Trail Blazers organization. He spent a decade with the team, primarily focusing on college scouting as the director. During the 2011–12 season, while acting as Portland’s interim general manager, he made a key trade that sent Gerald Wallace to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for a first-round pick — a pick that would later become Damian Lillard.
After his time in Portland, Buchanan served as the assistant general manager for the Charlotte Hornets for two seasons.
On June 29, 2017, he was hired as the General Manager of the Indiana Pacers, a position he continues to hold. His strong reputation across the league and expertise in college scouting played a significant role in his selection for the role.
